St James’ Church has a peal of six bells which are hung for traditional English change ringing. The biggest "Tenor" bells weighs 8cwt.
The bells date back to 1730, and were most recently restored in February 2012 thanks to a generous grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Here we can see the bells laid out in the church following restoration and before the rehanging.
Here are the bells after they were rehung.
A team of dedicated and enthusiastic bell ringers ring for special occasions and weddings. Bell ringing practice is on Mondays, and new recruits are always welcome to join in after an initial period of one-to-one training which can be arranged by the tower captain.
